Shaba Game Reserve: Isiolo County
There is no doubt that Shaba National Reserve, just 314 km from Nairobi, is one of the top game reserves in Kenya, known for its beautiful landscapes and diverse wildlife. This reserve, part of three unfenced areas including Samburu and Buffalo Springs, has an area of 239 square kilometers and shares the scenic Ewaso Nyiro River. This river enriches the land with lush vegetation that attracts various animal species, and the dramatic Shaba Hill Volcano makes it a captivating point of interest in Kenya.
Shaba is also famous for its conservation history linked to Joy and George Adamson, authors of Born Free, who raised the lioness Elsa here. Wildlife highlights include rare species like the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and large lion pride often seen near the river. Birdwatchers can spot unique species such as the yellow-billed woodpecker and martial eagle.
Here, you enjoy activities like morning game drives, birdwatching, and guided nature walks to experience the park’s scenic beauty. The reserve also allows cultural encounters with the Samburu people, offering a glimpse into their traditional lifestyle
