Buffalo Springs National Reserve: Isiolo Town, Isiolo County
Buffalo Springs National Game Reserve is located in northern Kenya, about 305 km from Nairobi. It lies south of Samburu National Reserve, separated by the Ewaso Ng’iro River, which provides the area’s only permanent water source. Covering 131 square kilometers, the reserve is home to diverse wildlife, including Beisa Oryx, gerenuks, reticulated giraffes, and large herds of elephants. It is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 390 species, including Somali ostriches and Abyssinian ground hornbills. The landscape features rolling plains, riverine forests, and the famous Buffalo Springs, which are fed by underground streams from Mount Kenya.
Visitors to Buffalo Springs can enjoy exciting game drives to spot animals along the riverbanks, especially during the dry season from June to October. For a more immersive experience, walking safaris guided by armed guides offer a chance to explore the reserve’s beautiful scenery and observe animals up close. Bird watching is a popular activity, with many unique species to be seen. Cultural safaris also provide an opportunity to visit the local Samburu communities and learn about their traditions and way of life.
